I am presently doing my doctoral research on the interface between posttraumatic stress disorder and spiritual emergence. I worked as a therapist and lecturer at San Francisco's Center for Psychological and Spiritual Health's clinic (formerly and now again called the Spiritual Emergence Network) until its closure in 2003. I apprenticed and taught with don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements for seven years. In my work I encourage awareness, honesty, and responsibility.
Along with individual therapy, I also provide workshops and retreats that focus on spirituality, self-growth, "Finding your voice, Speaking your truth," and radical honesty.

I am the editor of Modern Psychology and Ancient Wisdom: Psychological Healing Practices from the World's Religious Traditions (Haworth Press, 2003) and co-editor with Gurucharan Singh Khalsa of The Psychospiritual Clinician's Handbook: Alternative Methods for Understanding and Treating Mental Disorders (Haworth Press, Spring 2005). Therapeutic Approach And Spiritual Training: My approach to therapy is flexible and eclectic; I am not wedded to the methods of a single approach. Whatever technique I use, however, I take a fundamentally humanistic-transpersonal stance, rooted in Buddhist psychology, particularly the Mahayana view that healing comes from the mind’s true nature. Within this framework, I employ a variety of techniques, mostly psychodynamic, especially those techniques based on a point of view similar to Buddhist psychology. I also use family systems theory, and techniques from psychodrama and cognitive-behavior therapy, where these are appropriate. Basic to my approach is the idea that methods need to be adapted to what works in any given situation, but my perspective in therapy is spiritual and humanistic. Perhaps I can best describe my approach by saying that, for me, psychotherapy is a kind of meditation, from the therapist’s point of view. I started my formal spiritual training and practice about 15 years ago, when I was a student at CIIS. At that time I formally entered the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. I have done a variety of Buddhist meditation practices, and studied with teachers from Asia and the West. I have been fortunate to receive several initiations from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and some other highly accomplished masters. Truly, though, my practice remains in its infancy.

Bio: Nancy Poitou is a Certified Trauma Specialist and has worked with survivors of traumatic experiences throughout her career. She has personal experience with Spiritual Emergence/Kundalini Awakening and is a member of the Center for Psychological and Spiritual Health (formerly the Spiritual Emergence Network) and has counseled people in spiritual crisis since 1987. Nancy has taught Metaphysics at Mt. San Antonio College and has taught Meditation since 1988. As a hospice volunteer she worked with the dying and taught the Psycho-Spiritual Aspects of Hospice work to incoming volunteers at Hospice of the East San Gabriel Valley. Her background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, two years study with a professional clairvoyant and one year studying Natural Theology. Nancy has a Master’s Degree in Marriage, Family Child Counseling from Pacific Oaks College. She completed a one year internship working with cancer patients and their families at the Wellness Community. She also worked for four and a half years at Project Sister, a rape crisis center as a Sexual Assault Counselor. A licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, she facilitates a monthly meditation group as a part of her private practice.

Here in Columbia I have a general mental health practice that serves all ages and faiths. Wherever possible, I attempt to address presenting problems using a narrative/life-worth approach. Common issues seem to fall into several universal categories: Making sense of our suffering, Learning how to love, Discovering what we're built to be, Finding joy.
In telling their stories, clients often find that spirituality is what gives hope, direction, and meaning to experience. When those stories involve trauma or transcendence, it can be especially difficult to integrate the impact. I try to guide the process toward a life-affirming direction, respecting the perspective of their religious tradition and stage of development.
For my own part, I have been a bit of a pilgrim and certainly a maverick. I was baptized a Lutheran, raised an atheist, and discovered Taoism in college. While in the Marine Corps I had a life-changing epiphany that I was here to help, not hurt. Some years later I thought I was being called to the ministry, so I packed up my family, like Jed Clampett, and headed off to Berkeley. Halfway through the program I realized that my hearing had not been very clear. I left seminary and plunged into a spiritual crisis, feeling as if I had failed God. Later a lucid dream helped to clarify the call with a guided "life preview." I followed its promise, made it through academia with my compassion intact, and wound up in counseling where I belonged.
I've been doing this a couple of decades now and never seem to lose the thrill of seeing people meet their challenges and awaken to the person that God must have imagined.
